Y10 - Work Experience Coursework Information

You are writing for the triplet 'To Imagine, Explore and Entertain' -

This is a similar piece to the one based on Bryson completed at the beginning of this year. Your aim is to produce a piece that reflects your experience at the work experience placement in a vivid and engaging manner.

You could write about one incident during the two weeks, or about the experience as a whole, structured chronologically.

The important thing is that it is more than simply a diary - in the A* criteria, it should be 'a pleasure to read'.

The techniques that we looked at in the lesson before you went on placements, such as irony, sarcasm, exaggeration, imagery and so forth, should help to turn your 'daily log' of notes into something much stronger as a creative piece.

Your first draft of this piece is due on the first lesson back in September and should be around 1500 words - try not to go over 2000 and remember then emphasis is on quality - of vocabulary, structure, accuracy and content.

If you want to get ahead for next year, some reading of 'Othello' would serve you well for September - we'll start with Work Experience talks though, so you could start some preparation for that too.

Aside from that, have a fantastic break and enjoy the sun (when it arrives!)

Y10 - Great Expectations

Handout on "Context of a Gentleman"

If you were away for this handout, you need to read/print it

Handout on work for Half Term

Again, if you were away, you need to read this and complete the two tasks over half term.

Note that the following links are all to extend your reading and understanding -

they should not be a substitute for your own interpretations, which are vital for attaining top grades.

E-TEXTS:

http://www.literature.org/authors/dickens-charles/great-expectations/

Online copy of the novel - useful for finding quotes, as you can set your browser to find a word within an individual chapter

CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION:

http://www.victorianweb.org/

A varied selection of resources giving a good introduction to the Victorian context of the novel.

There is a huge selection of resources here dedicated to Dickens.

One paticularly useful page is at http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/dickens/ge/gesocov.html

http://www.fidnet.com/~dap1955/dickens/

Modern, informative and up-to-date Dickens site - useful for 'reading around' the novel and a fabulous starting point

to navigate the web's seemingly endless Dickens resources.

CRITICISM:

http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/english/melani/novel_19c/dickens/expectations.html

An excellent introductory essay on the novel and its central themes - including a good discussion on the

subject of the gentleman - more general Dickens information and links on this site can be found at

STUDY GUIDES / SUMMARIES:

Note - Quality of information and analysis on these sites is, at best, variable, but there are some useful summaries here.

These are not in any way a substitute for your own reading and interpretations.

Recommended Site: Andrew Moore's Guide to Great Expectations:

Although this is an A-Level guide, it offers consistently astute analysis

of the novel, as well as some useful summaries. Good discussion on 'Gentleman' issues.

Online study guide with some chapter summaries and a few notes on themes

- be careful with quality of some of the analysis here, though.

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/greatex/context.html

Some introductory, student-friendly notes on context of Great Expectations - again, be aware that

some of these 'study guide' sites offer a slightly simplistic view of the novel. Some information on the theme of

advancement is at http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/greatex/themes.html on the same site
